Hilda was a long time member of Broad River Genealogical Society and former treasurer of the organization.

"SHELBY - Mrs. Hilda Kathryn Brewton Keever, 91, of Shelby, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Hospice of Wendover.

A native of Buncombe County, she met and married her beloved husband of 50 years, Ken, in Hickory on Jan. 17, 1942. They began their life together in Winston-Salem where they lived for 17 years before moving to Shelby in 1961. She worked as the bookkeeper for Burns and Spangler Construction Company for 20 years before her retirement in 1983. She was a faithful and devoted member of Ascension Lutheran Church where she served the church in a number of capacities, including Sunday school teacher, chairman of the Alter Guild and circle member. She was also involved in a volunteer capacity with the local Girl Scout Council, was a member of the Phil Acres Garden Club and served as treasurer of the Broad River Genealogy Society. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading, traveling and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Cecil Brewton; her mother, Mae Miller Young; step-father, G.B. Young; husband, Kenneth L. Keever Sr.; and daughter, Barbara Kathryn Keever.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth L. Keever Jr. and wife, Jean F. Keever, of Shrewsbury, Pa.; her daughter, Debra K. Griffin and husband, Michael H. Griffin, of Shelby; and five grandchildren, Amanda Keever of Laurel, Md., Jennifer Keever of Brooklyn, N.Y., Hank Griffin of Winston-Salem, Emily Griffin of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Clay Griffin of New York, N.Y.

The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the Hospice staff, caregivers Debra Poston, Betty Poston, Ericka Poston, Vera Thompson, Jessie Eskridge, Ada Powell and Laura Thurman and her doctors, Dr. Brent Ferrell, Dr. James Potts and Dr. David Barker for their loving and compassionate care.

Visitation: The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 10, 5 to 7 p.m., at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mike and Debbie Griffin, 821 Hawthorne Road, Shelby.

Funeral: Thursday, June 11, 11 a.m., Ascension Lutheran Church of Shelby.

Burial: Sunset Cemetery.
