Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Lamme, widow of the late Dr. Achilles Lamme, died at her home in Bozeman Saturday morning [July 17 but headstone has July 18] after a long illness. Mrs. Lamme was a Montana pioneer and had made her home in Bozeman for many years, her family being prominent in the city and state.

Mrs. Lamme was Miss Elizabeth Jane Oliver and was born in Batesville, Albermarle county, Virginia, Nov. 28, 1828. Her first husband was John Harlowe and after his death she was married, Oct. 18, 1852, to Dr. Achilles Lamme of DeKalb county, Mo. They lived for a few years at St. Joseph, Mo., and came to Montana in 1865, starting by the steamer E.O. Stanard, which was wrecked near Omaha, Neb., and the doctor lost his stock of merchandise that he was bringing to Montana. The passengers were transferred to the Hattie May and later to the Deer Lodge.

Dr. Lamme and his family located first at Cow Island and they came by team to Gallatin county, purchasing a farm about 12 miles north of Bozeman. L.M. Howell, who was a partner of Dr. Lamme, went back to St. Louis and purchased a stock of goods which he brought to Montana and with Dr. Lamme opened a store on the farm where they conducted a business in general merchandise for about three years, when Dr. Lamme bought Mr. Howell's interest and moved the stock to Bozeman, where he became associated in business with his brother-in-law, John S. Mendenhall. He continued in the business until his death, which occurred Dec. 22, 1888. Mrs. Lamme therefore had made her home in Bozeman for the past 46 years.

Mrs. Lamme is survived by five children, Mrs. W[illiam] B[ean] (Florence) McAdow, now living in Oregon [Bozeman]; Edwin B[ates] Lamme of Bozeman, who is well known over the state; Mrs. Francis K[incannon] (Lora) Armstrong, wife of Judge Armstrong of Bozeman; Mrs. Arthur (Frances) Place and Miss Georgia Lamme, both now of San Francisco [Long Beach, California]. She also leaves three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all in Bozeman, except Maurice Lamme, who is in South America. Mrs. J[ohn] S[Samuel] Mendenhall [nee Mary Susan Oliver] of this city is her sister.
