SWANTON - Mildred Jessie Atwood, 82, a lifelong Swanton resident, died early Friday evening, Feb. 3, 2006, at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.

Born in Swanton, Nov. 9, 1923, she was the daughter of the late James and Jessie (Lambert) Atwood. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by two brothers, Harry H. Atwood of Groton, Conn. and Edwin A. Atwood of Swanton, Vt.

Mildred lived on Foundry Street in Swanton Village for approximately 65 years. She attended the former St. Anne?s Academy in Swanton and was a devoted communicant of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a former member of the parish Altar Society. Over the years from childhood on she remained good friends with her cousin, Dorothy Smart also of Swanton.

Mildred enjoyed bowling, going to the movies and Sunday afternoon rides throughout northern Vermont. She worked many years as a housekeeper and nanny for a local family. In September of 2003 she became a resident of Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford, Vt.

Besides her cousin Dorothy Smart, she is survived by a sister-in-law, Lillian Atwood of Groton, Conn.; three nieces, Harriet Wheeler and her husband, Richard of Ledyard, Conn., Arthurlene Provencher and her husband, Ronald of Gales Ferry, Conn. and Jacquilene Hancock of Groton, Conn.; along with several great and great great nieces and nephews and two great great great nieces, all of Connecticut.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was to be celebrated today, Feb. 6, 2006, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Atwood family lot in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery. Friends were able to call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Sunday evening, Feb. 5, 2006, from 6 to 8 p.m.
