Mads Larsen married Elizabeth Petersen on 14 Feb 1886, in Mesinge, Odense, Denmark. They were converted to the Mormon LDS religion and decided to emmigrate to America. They sailed from Copenhagen on the "S.S. Loven" to Liverpool, England, on the 29th of November 1855, and from Liverpool, they sailed on the ship "John J. Boyd" which landed in New York 16 Feb 1856. They stayed at Castle Gardens before leaving on 21 Feb or 22 Feb. They went by rail to Chicago, and there they joined the group who went to St. Louis, MO, where they arrived on 10 March. On 11 April, Mads, Elizabeth and daughter, Anna Sophia, who was 7 years old, joined the second LDS handcart company and continued their trip west to Florence, Nebraska, 275 miles away. They finally reached their destination, Salt Lake City, Utah, after many trials and tribulations. The family moved several times before moving to Kanosh, Utah. On July 16,1864, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Mads Larsen married his second wife, Jane Bishop Barrow. They had 6 children. Then Mads moved to Ferron, Utah, and the families lived there until 1880. At that time Mads was asked to move his families to Grand Valley to a Fort, which is now Moab. Elizabeth didn't choose to go to Grand Valley, so Mads and Jane moved there to settle the area. In 1881, Jane and her children moved back to Ferron and lived there until she died.
