Elizabeth Ann Cornfield Barron

Elizabeth Ann Cornfield was born in Peel County, Ontario, Canada, October 13, 1851, and died at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Everett DesJardins, near Colby, Kansas on April 2, 1933. She was married to Alexander Barron in Gray County, Ontario, November 6, 1867. Mr. Barron passed away about 12 years ago at Kirwin, Kansas.

Mr. and Mrs. Barron moved to Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas, in 1869 and moved to Smith County, Kansas 1872, homesteading south of Cedar on Glen Rock Creek. In 1890 they moved to Phillips County, residing at Kirwin where she lived until the passing of the husband in 1921. Seven children were born—four boys and three girls, five of whom are still living: J. W. of Colorado Springs, Colorado, W. A. of Phillipsburg, Bert and Roy of Kensington and Eva DesJardins of Colby, Kansas, with whom she has made her home for the past ten years. She leaves eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was one of a large family and is survived by two brothers, James and Joseph Cornfield of Toronto, Canada, and a nephew, Paul Hamilton, of Wray, Colorado.

Mrs. Barron has been in ill health for several years during all of which time she has had the devoted and loving care of her daughter Eva and her son-in-law, Everett DesJardins.

In her passing another of the few remaining pioneers has gone. She did her part in the development of the two counties, Smith and Phillips, and many of the middle age residents will ever remember her as the kindly energetic and helpful one who comforted and aided them in their childish troubles and sorrows and who was their friend and counselor in latter years. She was a loyal, devoted Christian mother, and her friends were limited only by the number of her acquaintances.

Funeral services were held at the DesJardins home northwest of Colby, Kansas, April 3. Rev. Armstrong was in charge. Interment in the Kirwin Cemetery on April 4, Rev. Greene of Kensington officiating.
