Born in Thomasville, NC, Stuart Cramer graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1888 and studied at Columbia University in 1889. Working his way up in the textile industry in Charlotte, NC, Cramer developed innovating ideas about how the industry, and indeed, the surrounding community should operate. Uniquely, Cramer turned his profits back into his own mills. In 1915 , he acquired controlling interest in a mill west of Charlotte, near Gastonia known as Maysworth. In 1922, the town's name was changed Cramerton. Cramer is known for his contribution to the textile industry having written books, served as president of the Americal Cotton Manufacturing Association, and was even instrumental in helping James B. Duke in developing Duke Power Company. However, Cramer is probably best noted for developing a system of controlling humidity in the cotton mill terming the process 'air conditioning'. His system not only provided comfort for the employees working in the heat of the mill, but cooled machinery that could easily heat enough to spark potentially destructive fires. His ideas contributed to what W H Carrier is credited to have invented. An historical marker stands near the town bearing his name in Gaston County.
