Mel passed away on June 2, 2009 at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah from complications of a stroke.


Born November 8, 1933 in Driggs, Idaho to Rudolph and Joyce Mathews Kaufman.


Graduated from Teton High School. Served in the Swiss-Austrian Mission from 1953-1956.


Mel married Joan Wilson on February 8, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple.


Served in the US Army from 1957-1959. Active member of the LDS Church and served in many capacities, currently as Assistant Ward Librarian.


He retired from LDS Church employment in 2004 after 30 years of service. He was also a supervisor for Meadow Gold Dairy for 10 years.


Survived by his wife, Joan; children: Mike (Shelly) Kaufman and Sue (Ray) DeRose; granddaughters: Nicki (Silis) Harper, Danielle (Joshua) Griffith and Michelle Kaufman; great-grandchildren: Roman Harper and Payton Griffith; sisters: Camilla (Bruce) Brunson and Sylvia (Glen) Orme; sister-in-law, Margaret (Allen) Jorgensen; brother-in-law, Jim (Mary Jane) Wilson; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Preceded in death by his parents; in-laws: Fairal and Kathryn Eardley Wilson; and brother-in-law, Allen Jorgensen.


Mel was always about serving others in any capacity he was able to. He is greatly loved by his family and they will miss him tremendously.


Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Taylorsville Central Stake Center, 4950 South 1950 West. Viewings will be held on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road (1700 West), and on Saturday at the Church from 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
