Abram Paul Crume was the youngest son of Elvin Earl Crume and Maggie Mable Holcombe. His parents had six children, but only Abram and his older brother Charles lived to adulthood. The Holcombes have deep roots in Texas, but Abram's grandfather moved the family to New Mexico before 1910. The family members moved back and forth between Texas and New Mexico. Abram was known to his family as Abe or Abie.

Abram served in the military during WWII. He enlisted in 1945 and was discharged in 1946. After the war, Abram married Jewel Inez Heatherly in the late 1940s. They welcomed two sons - Larry Don in 1948 and Ronald Edward in 1949. By 1950, the family was living in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, where Abe was working as a projectionist at the El Cortez Theatre. The couple divorced with Jewel remarrying in 1968.

At the time of his death in Amarillo, Texas, Abram was working as a cook in the Holiday Inn Hotel and had remarried. His widow's name was Greta Crume.
