Ruben A. Valerio, 62, of Layton, Utah, our loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend passed away after an eight and half year battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving wife, children, brother and sister.
Ruben was born in Taos, New Mexico on September 15, 1946 to Benjamin and Marie, later moving to Tooele, UT in his early childhood.
He married Brenda Baca in 1968 and had two children, later divorcing in 1989. In 1992, Ruben married Sharlene Metcalf. Ruben loved being surrounded by his grandchildren, family and friends. He cherished his life and brought out the best in everyone who knew him. He profoundly touched all of our lives and will be with us always.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, cooking and his Corvettes. Ruben lived out his fullest dreams by going Brown Bear hunting in Alaska with his son; harvesting both a six point bull elk and a five point buck deer in the Uintahs; catching both a 40 lb. King Salmon on the Kenai River, and a 500 pound Blue Marlin off the coast of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. He also owned several Corvettes, with his favorite being a 1967 coupe that he restored from the ground up.
Everyone that knew Ruben knew that he loved to cook. Some of his favorite meals to prepare for all of us were his chili-verde over his home-made mashed potatoes, dutch oven ribs, baked Alaska, prime rib, and his signature 'Ruben Poppers'.
Ruben retired from Hill Air Force Base after 38 years as a Civil Servant. He also served his nation in the United States Army and Air Force Reserve. Ruben retired from the 419th Fighter Wing as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Ruben is survived by his wife, Sharlene of Layton; son, Cary (JoDee) Valerio, Bountiful, UT; daughter, Cynthia (Timothy) Gill, Cincinnati, OH; step son, Clay Metcalf, Clearfield, UT; and step=daughter, Teryl Metcalf, Salt Lake City, UT. He has seven grandchildren - whom he loved the most in this life.
Ruben is preceded in death by his father Benjamin and brother Samuel.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 9 a.m. at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 210 S. Chapel Street, Layton, with Celebrant Monsignor, Victor Bonnell.
