1946 - 2009
Larry Dalton, a world renowned Tulsa pianist, conductor, composer and concert artist who was known for his annual Signature Symphony Christmas concerts, died Saturday. He was 63.
A memorial service is planned for 3:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at VanTrease Performing Arts Center, TCC-Southeast Campus, 10300 E. 81st. Dalton was born and raised in Big Stone Gap, VA, but he adopted Tulsa as his hometown after attending Oral Roberts University. He pursued an international performing, arranging and composing career after serving as a keyboardist for Oral Robert's crusades. Dalton was the leader of the contemporary Christian group Living Sound for a few years before returning to Tulsa to become ORU's music director in the 1970's and '80s. Usually when Dalton performed in Tulsa, it was as the orchestral pianist and arranger for the Oklahoma Sinfonia and its later incarnation, the Signature Symphony. The annual Christmas concerts that featured Dalton were among the group's most
popular productions. Dalton once said he loved tinkering with familiar songs and compositions to create something new.

Larry Randall Dalton, 63, of Tulsa, Okla., passed away at his home Saturday (May 30, 2009).

He was born in Big Stone Gap to Elmer William and Bertie Mae Snodgrass Dalton on April 24, 1946.

He began playing piano at age three and began studying piano at age seven. He graduated from Powell Valley High School and Oral Roberts University. During his college years, he traveled with the Oral Roberts ministry and later returned to serve as the Music Director for their TV ministry.

Upon graduation, he founded Living Sound, a contemporary Christian music group that ministered to the persecuted church in Poland, the USSR, Romania, East Germany and Yugoslavia. They also ministered in great European cathedrals and had a single appearance at St. Peters in Rome hosted by Pope John Paul II, who was a long-time Living Sound acquaintance.

Larry was a Steinway Piano Artist, concertizing in over 40 countries, as well as arranging for many popular secular artists and Christian artists. His repertoire includes Gospel music of every kind — three-piece combos playing Southern Gospel, chamber orchestras playing Mozart, big bands playing contemporary brass charts, and full symphonies playing Larry's arrangements and original compositions. He was an ASCAP writer and also a member of NARAS (the Grammy's). He has recorded for Integrity Music, Pianodisc Music Systems, Reader's Digest, and Ralph Carmichael's Light Records. Larry was Founder and President of the non-profit music ministry, Ars Musica Christiana, Inc., which in Latin means "the Art of Christian Music".

Larry was preceded in death by: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer W. Dalton; two brothers, Elmer W. (Bill) Dalton, Jr. of Norwalk, Ohio and Dwight D. (Danny) Dalton of Big Stone Gap; and a sister, Margaret Masters of Diamondhead, Miss.

Surviving are two brothers, Clarence E. Dalton of Sandusky, Ohio and Gerald R. Dalton, of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Evelyn Miller of Big Stone Gap, Anita Shepherd of Trenton, Ohio and Regina Kreiner of Norcross, Ga.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends 4 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the East Stone Gap United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. Thursday in the church worship center with The Rev. Roy Smith and The Rev. Michael Dalton officiating.
