KENTUCKY STANDARD OBITUARY – 09/12/2002
Catherine Downs, 88, of St. Francis, died Sunday, September 8, 2002, at Norton Springview Hospital in Lebanon. She was born April 11, 1914, in St. Francis and a former employee of the old J.W. Dant Distillery in Marion County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gori Downs; her stepson, A.L. Downs Jr.; a stepdaughter, Evelyn Weideman; her parents, James Patrick Alvey and Mary Prudie Lucas Downs; a sister, Mary Anna Bowman; and five brothers, William Leslie Alvey, Thomas Benedict Alvey, James Arthur Alvey, John Alvin Alvey and James Edward "Mooder" Alvey. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Leon (Judy) Miles and Mrs. Joe (Brenda) Raley, both of St. Francis; a son, Carl Downs, of St. Francis; three stepdaughters, Geneva Clark, of Mount Washington, Gladys Downs and Emma Hardin, both of Taylorsville; four grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and 14 step-grandchildren. The funeral Mass is 11:30 a.m. today at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis with burial in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery. The Rev. James W. Graf is chief celebrant with Sister Mary Ellen Curl assisting. Mattingly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Alphonsus Liguori "Gori" Downs on March 16, 1977; father, James Patrick Alvey on November 14, 1958; mother, Mary Prudie Lucas Downs on February 7, 1953; a sister, Mary Anna Bowman on January 27, 1971; five brothers, William Leslie Alvey on May 6, 1934, Thomas Benedict Alvey on August 21, 1974, James Arthur Alvey on August 22, 1987, John Alvin Alvey on June 17, 1998 and James Edward "Mooder" Alvey on January 26, 2001; a stepson, A.L. Downs Jr.; and a stepdaughter, Evelyn Weideman. Survivors include: two daughters, Judy Miles and Brenda Raley, both of St. Francis; a son, Carl Downs of St. Francis; three stepdaughters, Geneva Clark of Mt. Washington and Gladys Downs and Emma Hardin, both of Taylorsville; four grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and 14 step-grandchildren.
