In the early years of their marriage they lived on the Starr Farm near Whitesboro, Texas. They were the parents of 10 children, 6 girls and 4 boys. Four of their daughters died young.Susie Ellen, b.1888 and Mary Etta, b. 1889 both died in August 1896 after being struck by lightening. They are buried in the Whitesboro Cemetery, in unmarked graves, just South of Albert and Mary Theobold's graves. Daughter, Ida Elizabeth, b. abt.1892 died before 1896 from drinking impure water. Another unknown daughter, b. abt 1894 also died before 1896.

In the Fall of 1908, John took his wife and 4 boys and left the Red River Valley and moved to the New Mexico Territory. They arrived in Portales, NM during a snow storm. The 2 older girls, Eva Magdalena "Maggie" and Lula had already married. They Homesteaded seven miles East and two miles North of Tatum, New Mexico.
