Joe G. Allen, 78, a rancher and prominent citizen in Butte Valley, died FEb. 24, 1999, in Klamath Falls from complications of congestive heart failure.

Mr. Allen was born in California to Bertha and Garfield Allen. He graduated from Garden Grove High School and attended Fullerton Junior College.

He married Dorothy Adams in 1940. They had four children. In 1971, he married Dorothy Fulghum Anderson, who died of cancer five years later. He married Arlyn Hodgert in 1978 in Redondo Beach, Calif.

Mr. Allen loved fishing and did some hunting when he was younger. He was a good musician and sang with various quartets in Butte Valley. He also played the guitar. He loved to travel and went to Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He was an avid reader.

For 12 years he was the lay minister at the Butte Valley Community Church.

He served on the Siskiyou County Board of Education for 15 years, served as a county supervisor and served on the road commission in the 1950s. He also served on local school boards and was a grange member for 50 years, having served as a master of the Grange.

He was the wagonmaster for the Bicentennial Wagon Train from Butte Valley to Yreka in 1976. He also served on the board of directors at the Klamath Falls Gospel Mission. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Arlyn B. Allen of Macdoel, chldren and their spouses, Janet and Manfred Lutz of Macdoel, Rodney and Linda Allen of Brookings, Dorothy and Jim Osterling of Cowansville, Pa., JoAnne and Charlie Criss of Dorris, Kimberly and Rick Findley of Lewisburg, Pa., Doug and Sherrill Anderson of Whittier, Calif., Steve and Daun Anderson of New York City; grandchildren, Sandra, Sylvia and Lane, Steve, Suzanne and Ethan, Barbara, Jason, Becky and Gregg, Joe, Matt, Aaron, Chas, Jessica, Kristin, Kate, Ian, Evan and Tommy, great-grandchildren, B.J.,Rachel, Kassi, Jamie and Warren; brothers and sisters-in-law LeRoy Allen of Carmel, Calif., Ben and Sue Allen of Whittier, Barbara Allen of Newberg; and numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph G. and Bertha E.; a brother, Archie, and his first two wives.
