Towner is the son of Alexander S Arbuckle and Amanda Ann "Mandy" Smith. He enlisted in the Civil War on 16 Aug 1862 at the age of 19 with a rank of Private. He was in the Indiana 6th Infantry, Company C for the Union. He was wounded on 30 Aug 1862 in Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky. He was then imprisoned on 8 Apr 1864 in Mansfield, De Soto County, Louisiana. He mustered out on 30 Jun 1865 in New Orleans, Orleans County, Louisiana.
He married Susan A Mullen on 23 Mar 1866 in Rush County, Indiana. They had 6 known children: Magetta 1867, Corena Leona 1869, Mary Almina 1874, William Alexander 1877, Susan 1878 and Nettie Murel Arbuckle 1883.
