The Fight

Brothers and cousins, marched off to the fight
None of them knowing, of their future plight.
There were two Dalton's and a Halford in this group
They were to become soldiers, in the same troop.
Andrew, Johile and William were their names
But what happened to them, is a great shame.
They fought for the south, in NC 62nd F Company
But when they were captured, received no sympathy.
They were not killed by, bullets, bombs or bayonet
The enemy let them die by neglect, without any regret.
Eighty Acres of Hell, this prison camp was later called
Thousands of southern boys, its horrors would befall.
Torture, starvation and disease were the weapons used
Most if not all the prisoner's, were constantly abused.
This type of treatment happened, in the north and south
Just the thought of it, leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
I am proud of ALL the hero's and the sacrifice they bore
Regardless, of the color of the uniform they wore.
Let this be a reminder to us, with all the lives lost
Never fight among ourselves, whatever the cost.
