Rachel Orlean Culpepper Kliem passed away Saturday, August 16, 2014 at her home in Richmond, surrounded by family members. Services are set for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 400 Jackson St., Richmond, TX 77469, with a brief reception and then interment at Morton Cemetery in Richmond. Among the officiants will be the Reverend David Sheppard, Jr., her nephew. Memorial contributions may be sent to Calvary Episcopal School, 1201 Austin Street, Richmond, Texas, 77469, or St. John’s United Methodist Church, at 400 Jackson St., Richmond, Texas, 77469.

Rachel was born in Limestone County, Texas, on May 9, 1921, to Robert Earl Culpepper and Ruth Johnson Culpepper. In 1993 she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, R.E.L. “Bubba” Kliem. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her six siblings: Doris Josephine, Iris Emma, Hazel Ruth, Frederick Earl, Mary Maurine, and Margaret Elone.

Rachel was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Richmond, and she lived out that faith by spending her entire life caring for others. She was a doting aunt to her nieces and nephews: Peggy, Gary, Larry, Gerald, Lynda, Brenda, Michael, Patricia, David, Karen, Fred, Steve, Ranelle, and Lisa. In her teens, she received the nickname of “Bootsie” after a comic strip character. This nickname stuck with her for many years, and as her siblings had children, she was often called “Aunt Bootsie.” She became known as “Granny” with the births of Sarah and Kate Mann, daughters of her niece, Lisa Schultz Mann and husband Tom Mann.

One of the great joys of her recent days was the birth of Rachel Gwendolyn Hendrick, who was named after her, and is the daughter of another namesake, her great-niece Rachel Danielle Krejci Hendrick and husband John Hendrick. Great-niece Rachel Sheppard of Hurst, Texas, is also named after “Aunt Bootsie.” Rachel derived great joy also from her numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Rachel loved spending time at her country cabin in Carmine, Texas. She also kept up with friends from her days as an employee in the medical supply department of Polly Ryon Hospital. She was well-known to members of the Richmond-Rosenberg community, and loved to be involved in the charitable activities that were part of her husband’s membership in the Rosenberg Rotary Club and in the Lions Club.

Rachel was active up until she suffered a stroke just over a week ago. Special thanks are extended to Bonnie, Brenda, Michelle, and Maria of Encompass Hospice Care, and to Kathleen, Lilly, and Sharla of Carebuilders, for their loving contributions that made it possible for Rachel to remain in her home as she wished, surrounded by her family and all the mementos of a life well-lived. Rachel had a love of life and sense of humor and fun that is legendary among her family and friends. Her example and her loving influence will live on in all of those who now miss her so very much.
