"STATE WOMAN'S HUSBAND CITED FOR VIET AIRLIFT
First Lt. Ernest W. Merrow of Lodi, Calif. completes Vietnam duty this month after 'wearing two hats' in an aero-medical heartline for U.S. wounded.

Lt. Merrow, whose wife is a Cromwell native, helped activate and command the military Airlift Command's (MAC) aero-medical evacuation detachment at Da Nang Air Base.

A flight nurse, the 28-year-old officer has also received 13 awards of the Air Medal for sustained aerial achievement.

Flew 10,000
Lt. Merrow and his 12-man medical unit flew more than 10,000 sick and wounded from front-line aid stations to echelon hospitals during the past year.

His unit uses specially-equipped C-123 Providers in Vietnam flights and C-118 Lifemaster and C-130 Hercules aircraft for medical airlift to the Philippines, where the more seriously wounded and ill begin the transoceanic flight home.

The Air Force's newest jet transport, the C-141 Starlifter, is used almost exclusively for the fast overseas flight and regularly scheduled flights direct from Vietnam to Travis AFB, Calif., were inaugurated early this month to further shorten the trip.

Lt. Merrow, who has been nominated for the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star Medal, is scheduled for Air Force duty at Wiesbaden, Germany.

The lieutenant, a graduate of Lodi Union High School, received his A.A. degree at Stockton (Calif.) Junior College of the Pacific, also at Stockton. He completed training at San Joaquin General Hospital School of Nursing in Stockton and was a member of the hospital staff prior to entering the Air Force.

Lt. Merrow is married to the former Marilyn J. Martin, daughter of Philip Martin of 554 Main St., Cromwell."
