Again from out of the shadows of the afternoon there has appeared the dark angel of death, and has taken one of our beloved and honored citizens from our midst. John Adams came into this world on Nov. 24, 1853, and went fourth at the beck and call of the Angel of Death on March 2, 1931, to that mysterious realm that we long for dream of and hope home day to occupy with our lobed ones who have gone ahead that there might be more happiness and solace there. On Nov. 25, 1878, he took unto himself a wife, Martha Lucinda Cook. To this happy couple were born four children, Calvin, James, Martha, and Minnie. His loving wife and companion was called forth from this world Dec. 17, 1918, where she went to join her two children, Calvin and Minnie, who preceded her in her journey to the land where they shall never die. Besides the children who still survive, he mleaves 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren who will never more know the comfort of their kind old grandfather and who will never grow reconciled to their great loss. Besides the relatives he leaves a great number of friends and neighbors who will always hold a pleasing memory for “Uncle John.” He early saw the “light” was converted and joined the Prospect Baptist church on Oct. 5, 1884. He remained a member of the Prospect church until the Selmore Baptist church was organized. It is pleasing to know that Uncle John was a charter member of this church and was instrumental in securing this monument to the religious life of this community. He was a devout and loyal Christian until the end, and those who knew him have no fear concerning his soul because they know that his soul has gone to the land of promise to dwell in the house of the Lord forever. God will take care of his children, and surely Uncle John was a child of God. His soul is resting in peace. He was a good neighbor, always ready to lend all possible aid and his kind and fatherly advice will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. It is hard to give him up but we are comforted by the words of cheer of the Lord Christ and secure in the knowledge that He went to prepare a place for Uncle John. He is now reposing in that haven of rest, where earthly cares and sorrow are no more, and with the knowledge of his memories we deliver him unto the hands of Him who made him, knowing we can trust Him to care for His children forever. Funeral services were held Friday, March 6, 1931, at 2 p.m. by Rev. Ross Carter in the Selmore church, with burial in Selmore cemetery under direction of T.B. Chaffin.
