Final rites for Silas Bester Owen, 90, were held in Wellington March 20, and the body was taken to his old home at Lockhart for burial.
Mr. Owen was born November 1, 1855 in Ripley, Mississippi and came to Texas in 1857 with his mother and sister, his father having died previously. After coming to Texas, his mother married Abel Baker who raised Mr. Owen.
He lived almost his entire life in Caldwell County near Lockhart. He joined the Primitive Baptist Church in 1891 and was an active member for over 50 years. He also took a keen interest in local government and in law enforcement in his county during his entire lifetime. For the past year he has been living in Wellington with his daughter, Mrs. D. H. Handley
He was a grandson of Larkin Owen and the second and last child of Silas Bester and Lucinda Jeffrey Owen. He was born on November 1, 1855 in Tippah County, Mississippi. He father died before he was born. At the age of two, he came to Texas with his mother and lived most of his life in Caldwell County, near Lockhart.
On December 9, 1875, Silas Bester Owen was married to Miss Abbie Gail Jones.
At the time of his death, he was 90 years, 4 months and 19 days of age.
Survivors in his family are his wife and eight children. They are Mrs. D. H. Handley and Silas Bester Owen Jr. of Wellington, Mrs. Roy Handley of Lockney, Mrs. August Baethge of Doss, Mrs. Grover Blundell of Luling, Odus Owen of McMahan, Jesse Owen and Claud Owen of Mathis. Three daughters preceded him in passing. Other survivors are 28 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
