He attended Hebron Academy and came to Greene ME in 1814 as a teacher. Formed a successful mercantile firm with Anslem Cary called Barrell & Cary. He was elected State Senator and represented Greene in the Maine Legislature for several terms. He was Deacon of the Baptist Church and held various town offices. He served as a Trustee of Waterville College and established the Post Office at Greene Corner where he served a Post Master. His official title is Hon. Dea. Elijah Barrell, Esq.
