John was the son of John M. and Mary Keller "Martin" Barnett. He married June 20, 1917 near Hoxie, Kansas to Nannie Luzena Trueblood. They farmed in Hoxie before moving to Wymore, where he worked on a section crew of the Burlington Railroad. He also operated a Dray line there. He and Nannie owned and operated a small grocery store at one time. He served as Custodian at Wymore Public Schools until his 1962 retirement. John and Nannie were members of the Wymore United Methodist Church.
