Mother abandoned Sarah and her brother Stephen on a train in Arkansas about 1875. Both were taken in by George and Clarissa Ayers. The children worked as waiters in the Ayers restaurant until they were 18 years of age. In the 1900 census she had given birth to 10 children out of which only four are living. Between 1887 and 1895 six children died.
