Dr. William R. Maddox, a well-known resident and physician of this city, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his farm on the Ridge Road, opposite Wesley Heights, above Georgetown. Six months ago Dr. Maddox contracted the trip (?), which developed into acute lung disease. His health failed steadily thereafter and he was compelled to give up his practice.

For the purpose of taking light exercise he was in the habit of going to his farm every day, changing his clothes for a working suit and doing such light labor as his enfeebled condition allowed. Yesterday, as usual, he was in the yard among the trees, employed in raking up the fallen leaves. A neighbor was with him and left him in apparently good physical condition at 12:30 o’clock. Upon his return at 1:10 o’clock the friend found him lying on his face, where he had fallen, a large pool of blood under him and the leaves from a point in front of the granary door to the spot where he lay, some twenty-five years, saturated with blood. He had evidently endeavored to reach the residence where he usually kept remedies, but had fallen from weakness.

Dr. Maddox was a son of the late Captain W.A.T. Maddox of the Marine Corps. He was born at Erie, Pennsylvania; studied medicine at Philadelphia, where he had a large practice for a number of years and had a warm and intimate friend in the late Dr. Gross of that city. His childhood was spent in this city, where his ancestors resided and elven years ago he returned here and married the daughter of Henry C. Jewell, a former Chief of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. His wife and one child, a little girl nine years old, survive him.

The deceased was forty-five years of age. He was prominent in Masonic circles. He belonged to Hiram Lodge No. 10, F.A.A. M.; Hiram Chapter No. 10, R.A.M. and to Columbia Commandery No. 2, K.T.

Through a misunderstanding, it is said, the body upon being brought to the city was conveyed to the morgue instead of the family residence. About 10 o’clock last night it was removed to the residence at 2139 Pennsylvania Avenue. Previously Coroner Carr was notified and upon investigating the circumstances grave a certificate of death from natural causes.

The funeral will take place from the late residence Saturday at 2 o’clock PM and will be under Masonic auspices. The interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
