Royal Mistress. Although she became lover to Edward III while working as a lady-in-waiting to his Queen Philippa, her position was not acknowledged until the Queen's death after which Edward began to lavish gifts such as jewels and property upon her. They had a son together, John de Southeray. Two daughters, Jane and Joan, may also have been of Royal blood. Although many contempories were resntful of her, she seems to have possessed good financial acumen, eventually building up an impressive portfolio of properties. Some believe she was the prototype of Chaucer's 'Wife Of Bath' and Langland's Lady Mede. She engaged in a dispute with the Abbot of St Albans over land, and after the King's demise in 1377 she was banished by Parliament, her lands forfeit. In later years she successfully regained some of her property and eventually died at one of them in Upminster, Essex.
