Our beloved mother, Emma Ruth Nielsen Cundick, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2009.

Ruth was born to Lars and Elenor Nielsen on December 23, 1918 in Spanish Fork, Utah.

She comes from a strong pioneer heritage, some of whom helped settle Spanish Fork where they became farmers, bankers and community leaders. Ruth graduated from Jordan High School where her father was the principal.

While in high school, she performed in HMS Pinafore, where her future husband, Ray Cundick, saw her and was attracted to her. They were later married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, and at the time of Ray's passing, had been married for 69 years.

Ruth attended LDS Business College and at various times worked as a secretary, a court reporter, and medical research associate. However, her great love and devotion was to her family. Ruth enjoyed homemaking and gardening and was a skilled seamstress. Her children looked forward to new school clothes, prom gowns, and the matching dresses she made for herself and her daughters.

Her children learned the value and benefits of hard work as the family enjoyed a sparkling clean home and a beautiful garden. The characteristic which most exemplifies Ruth was her concern for others.

Throughout her life, Ruth showed compassion as she provided meals, beautiful flowers, and service to those around her. Ruth and Ray's home was always the family gathering place. Visits to their home always meant lots of good food, hugs, and feelings of warmth and acceptance.

She was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities. She enjoyed working with children and served in Stake and Ward Primary, Sunday School and Young Women callings. She was also actively involved in service organizations in the community.

Ruth is survived by her four children: Lynn (Janeen), Kathy Lundberg (Steven), Pauline Smith (Dennis), Annette Burdette (Steven), 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grand-children.
