SOUTH PORTLAND - Eleanor W. Shanks, 78, formerly of Richland Street died Tuesday in a local nursing home.
She was born here, a daughter of Samuel G. and Maude Keene Lowell. She attended local schools and graduated from South Portland High School in 1932.
Mrs. Shanks owned a beauty shop here for eight years until she married Elric A. Shanks.
She studied at the Portland Museum of Art under Alexander Bowers and Edward Mayo, and also at the Women's Literary Union.
She enjoyed painting watercolors and was a member of the Hayloft Society, Portland.
She studied flower show judging at the University of Maine and was a flower show judge. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Osawantha Garden Club.
Mrs. Shanks was a member of Peoples United Methodist Church and a life member of Cape Elizabeth Grange, where she was a chaplain and lecturer.
She was a member of the Ceres Circle, the Cumberland County Pomona, a past matron of the Longfellow Chapter and a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Arok Temple, Daughters of the Nile, and the Owls Bridge Club.
Her husband died in 1979.
Surviving are a sister, Shirley Lowell Down of Westbrook, and a brother, Russell Gibson Lowell of South Portland.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m Friday at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road. Spring burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
