VARNA: Charles LaVern Carlson Sr., 92, of Varna passed away at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at ASTA Health Care Center in Toluca, IL.

He was born on August 13, 1913, in rural Varna, the son of Charles August and Frieda Hylin Carlson. He married Ethelyn Wells on June 26, 1917, in Varna. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Charles "Chuck" Jr. (and Theresa) Carlson of Albuquerque, NM; one daughter, Lynn (and John) Phillips of Varna; three grandsons, Brian (and
Ann) Rinaldo and Jeff (and Sherry) Rinaldo, both of Varna, and Rich (and Allyson) Carlson of California; one granddaughter, Cathy (and Gordon) Nasenbeny of Grayslake, IL; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

His brother, Raymond Carlson, preceded him in death.

He retired from Caterpillar on September 30, 1971, after 30 years of service. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Varna and a member of the Varna Fire Department for many years. He was an avid Cubs baseball fan.

Cremation has been accorded. There will be no visitation. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at First Lutheran Cemetery #2 in rural Varna. The Varna Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Varna Fire & Ambulance Service, Toluca Ambulance Service or First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Varna.
