William Allen was the son of William H and Elizabeth Shinn Johnson, born in Carroll County, Georgia. When William H returned home from the Civil War, the family headed for Texas in 1865, along with eight other families.

William A was amongst the youngest children among the families on the trail to Texas. His Aunt Ellen Shinn, a spinster was expected to do much of the cooking and taking care of the children. Once while making coffee, she spilled hot coffee on William A's leg which left a terrible scar. William H felt his sister-in-law did this on purpose, and cursed Ellen. This was the only time William A ever heard his father use bad language.

When they arrived in Texas, they had one slave left, an old woman. When William Allen was about seven years old, he decided she was not doing enough work, and told her to leave, she did. William H got out of bed, and whipped William Allen, the only time he ever spanked William Allen. It was not long after this that William H Johnson died.

William Allen married Henrietta Story, and they had three sons, Edgar born 1888, John Robert born 1890 and Henry born 1894. Henrietta died 6 hours after giving birth to Henry, she was warned by the doctor not to have any more children after she had Bob. A Dutch lady who was a neighbor took Henry and kept him until William Allen married Elizabeth Roberson.

William Allen married Elizabeth Victoria Roberson around 1895. They lived in Leon County, where their children, William Jordon, Leanna, and Margaret were born until William Allens heath began to deteriorate, the doctor there advised them to move to Houston County, where his brother-in-law, Dr Stokes, and he would be cured. It is unknown what caused his health problems.

They sold what they could and moved to Crockett,in the Porter Springs area, Margaret was about four years old.

Dr Stokes treated him with several remedies, the first was to place a pan of water under his bed every night. The reason for this treatment was not known, and Dr Stokes pulled all of his teeth except one, William A refused to let him pull it, he wanted one tooth left. But he regained his health.

William A and Lizzie also help raise their grandson Pete, who was born when his mother Leanna was very young.
