Besides the widow, Mrs Anna Burroughs Pen Dell he is survived by a daughter , Mrs. George Pittman, Dallas, Texas, a son, Charles Pen Dell, Chicago, and a grandson, Pen Dell Pitman.
Merritt Pen Dell was a splendid example of the patriotic American in war and in peace and his ideals of the duties and responsibiliites of hes citizenship were high. His was a forceful personality and he posessed large executive capacity, and in addition, his was a kindly nature and he found it easy to make and hold friends. His passing will be deeply mourned by all who knew this knightly gentleman.

Funeral services for Merritt R. Pen Dell, 89, Cival war veteren, retired railroad builder, and resident of Rockford for 22 years, will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the home, 1801 National avenue. Dr. John Gordon will officiate and burial will take place in Greenwood cemetery.
Mr. Pen Dell died Wednesday night at 6:30 o'clock at his home after a brief illness of heart disease.
Born in Chenango county, New York, September 1933, Mr. Pen Dell served in the Cival war as sergeant of Company L, 20th New York cavalry.
Operated Sugar Plantation
In 1878 Mr. Pen Dell went to Texas, where he owned and operated a sugar plantantion near Houston, and was also interested in land development enterprises. He stayed there until 1882.
From 1882 to 1886 he was superintendent of train movements from Chihuahua, Mexico, south for 800 miles, having general charge of various phases of construction work as well.
Builds Railroads
In 1887 Mr. Pen Dell went to Lower California as superintendent of construction for the Southern Pacific, taking an active part in the building of railroads in that section of the country. Again he manifested great interest in the development of land enterprises and served as vice president of a water and orange land company.
