Mrs. Elizabeth (Matthews) Caldwell, wife of William Caldwell, died in her home, 34 East College street, at 4 o'clock this morning, following an illness which resulted from a general breakdown and which had extended over a period of several months
Mrs. Caldwell was born in Peters township, March 21, 1846, and lacked but four days of reaching her seventy-sixth birthday anniversary. She was a daughter of the late Captain and Sarah Matthews, former well- known residents of the community. Her marriage to Mr. Caldwell took place December 26, 1867. For about thirty years following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell resided in Upper St. Clair township, Allegheny county, moving about twenty-four years ago to Canonsburg, which since that time has been their home.
Besides her husband Mrs. Caldwell leaves two sons and a daughter, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, three brothers and one sister. The sons are J. C. Caldwell, Pittsburgh ,and W. H. Caldwell, Homestead Park, . Pa.; the daughter is Sarah C, wife of W. J. McMurray, Canonsburg, R. D. The brothers and sisters are: Leonard H. Matthews, New Castle; Mrs. Sarah M. McMurray, widow of J. Harvey McMurray, Akron, O.; Alexander L. Matthews, Coshocton, O., and Chatham G .Matthews, Canonsburg, R. D.
When a girl Mrs. Caldwell became a member of the Peters Creek United Presbyterian Church. After her marriage and until coming to Canonsburg she was a communicant of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, and since residing here was a member of the Greenside Avenue United Presbyterian congregation. She was a consistent Christian and faithful in all her duties to the church.
Funeral services will be held at the Caldwell residence Monday after noon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Bethel cemetery.
