The nephew, Samuel Shortridge, referred to in the article, is the future Senator of California, Samuel Morgan Shortridge, same middle

Samuel was listed on the 1870 census as a "Blacksmith", on the 1880 census as a "Farmer", on his Military Home death record as a "Blacksmith", and he was a 'lawyer', also performing the 1872 divorce and child custody of my great-grandfather, William Montgomery Ware, who was Samuel' first wife'(Mary Jane Ware) nephew, who was living with them in 1870, on the census.
