Enlisted in Company H, 33rd Infantry Regiment Iowa on 1 Sep 1862; Transferred into Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 15 Jan 1864; Transferred out of Company H, 33rd Infantry Regiment Iowa on 15 Jan 1864. While living in Missouri, on 1 Sep 1884, Owen K. Shanafelt, an ‘invalid', files for military pension. Buried: Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles County, California.
