The Cherokee Democrat - Friday, January 8th, 1904 - The remains of Henry Dieterich were brought here from Parkston, S.D., Monday evening, where he died on Saturday last at the home of his daughter, Mrs Jos Lingscheit. Mrs. Lingscheit and a sister accompanied the remains here. It was expected to have the funeral Tuesday, but Rev. Father Barron was out of town and the burial did not take place until 9 o'clock this morning.

Services were held at the Catholic church. The deceased was 83 years of age. He went from here with the Lingscheit family to Parkston two years ago .

Contributed by Carl: Henrys son, John Dietrich, was wounded on May 17, 1863, during at assault at the Big Black River Bridge, Mississippi. He died from his wounds on May 18, 1863. He was mostly likely buried with others in a grove of trees near the site of the assault and later reinterred as one of many "Unknowns" in the Vicksburg National Cemetery. The regimental roster says John enlisted at age 18. Since his mother said he was born in December 1854, he would only have been 17 when he enlisted. The descendant with whom I have been in contact says that is correct and John lied about his age when he enlisted.

Since John died, his mother later claimed a pension as a "dependent". In the process she signed numerous affidavits relating to the family. Her husband, Henry Dietrich, also signed an affidavit. All are under oath and notarized. In one affidavit Catharine Peschong Dietrich listed the names and birthdates of her children although she did not include a complete birthdate for John. She said that she and her husband, Henry, were born in Luxembourg and their children were:

Nicholas born 08/24/50
Martin born 04/13/52
John born 12/1854
Katharine born 03/13/56
Mary born 04/04/58
Margaret M. born 03/30/60
Agnes born 08/23/62.

With respect to Margaret, her stone says she was born 03/30/58. I suspect her mother's affidavit is correct and the stone is wrong but, without a copy of Margaret's death certificate, I cannot say for sure. Catharine was having children every two years and she said Mary was born 04/04/58. For Margaret to have been born in 1858 as her stone says, that means Catharine's information about Mary's birthdate was wrong. I suspect the date for Mary is correct, that the pattern of two-year births continued, and that the person providing information as to the date of Margaret's birth was misinformed. Without the death certificate, I suspect the most that could be done is to point out the discrepancy.
