G. W. Combs, physician and surgeon, was born in February, 1838, in Gallatin County, Ill. He is one of a family of nine children of Jonathan and Iayvilla (Dolan) Combs. The father was born in Kentucky, February 22, 1806; he came in about 1825, to Gallatin County, where he died in 1872. By occupation he was a farmer and blacksmith. The mother, a Virginian, born in 1812, died in 1876. After his education in the schools of his native county, he followed teaching a few years, and then studied medicine under Dr. Campbell, of Equality, for three years, and for a time under Dr. Leacord of New Market. After practicing medicine for twelve years and frequently attending lectures during the time, he graduated from the Cincinnati School of Medicine in 1878. In April, 1858, he married Hannah E., dallghter of John F. and Mary E. Hemphill, and born in Pope County, Ill., in 1846. Their six children are W. F., Agnes A., Annie, Samuel M., Ellen E. and George E. Since 1870, when Dr. Combs located at Ridgway, he has been remarkably successful, and now owns 120 acres of land adjoining the town. He is a Republican in politics, and a member of the Masonic fraternity. He and his wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
