James Donald Mathis Jr., of Longview passed away April 13, 2009, at home.

He was born in Longview to James Donald "Don" and Mary E. (Singley) Mathis Feb. 3, 1947. Jim attended Mark Morris High School and enlisted in the Army, where he trained as a paratrooper. He was an active member for four years.

Jim served in law enforcement as a Kelso Police officer for 21 years. He truly enjoyed his role as Officer Mathis for the "Bugs Bunny Club." Jim was politically active in the police association and worked narcotics in the early 1990's.

Jim was a member of the 23 Club, the National Locksmith and served as past president and member of Kiwanis.

In 1992 Jim married Candice "Candy" Coulter and they made their home in Longview.

Jim was a compassionate and understanding man. His causes included homelessness and disabled vets. He found many things to fill his life after retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent a lot of time transforming his yard into a garden. Jim enjoyed building, locksmithing, welding, woodworking, creative writing, reading, traveling, photography, the computer, and he had collections of every sort. He also enjoyed time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Jim's survivors include his wife, Candy Mathis of Longview; his beloved son, James Aaron and granddaughters, Myckele and Hailey Mathis, all of Vancouver; a sister, Vicky Crowston of Vernonia; three stepchildren, Angela Ankenman, Rachelle Loomer and Trevor Beam, and four stepgrandchildren, all of Longview.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Monticello Hotel Fireside Room.
