Margaret was the daughter of Joseph and Jane (Black) Watson and was born in the small mining town of Morley, Colorado. She began working at a young age to help the family survive. At age 13, she worked as a cook at the Walsenburg hospital. At age 16 she began training as a surgical nurse under the tutelage of a surgeon in Walsenburg. She worked as a nurse for many years. In 1932, she married David Lewis Jones and helped him raise his four children. Her sister Betsy was the birth mother of teh four children. In 1958 she and her husband adopted their firt born's son (Carl). She had eleven grandchildren. Later in her life, she once again worked as a nurse to support herself.
