O. Alexander Nunn died attempting to save Frank C. Smith from drowning, Great Falls, Montana, July 1, 1932. While bathing in the Missouri River, Smith, 20, floated into water 20 feet deep, went under the surface, rose, and threshed. After a youth swam to him and briefly tried to aid him, another youth, who was a good swimmer, reached Smith and towed him eight feet toward the bank. Smith then grasped the youth, and both were twice momentarily submerged. From wadable water, Alexander, 17, schoolboy, then swam three feet to Smith and took hold of him, and the youth got free and swam to wadable water. Smith grabbed Alexander around the neck, and they drifted 25 feet as they bobbed up and down and then sank together and were drowned.

Two Young Men Meet Death in River
Alexander Nunn, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Omar Nunn of Fields, and Frank Smith, 20, of Bagley, Minn., drowned in the Missouri river Friday afternoon when they stepped into a deep hole while swimming about a mile above the poor farm. The bodies were recovered a short time later.
In company with Archie Anderson, a cousin of Nunn, the boys went to the river some time before 5. Not knowing there was a hole in the bed of the river, caused by sand pumping, Smith suddenly slipped from the edge of the pit and disappeared. Nunn attempted to rescue him and also was pulled under. Anderson then jumped into the deep water in an effort to save his companions, but was unsuccessful. He managed to reach the edge of the pit and save himself. The body of Nunn was found about 75 feet from the place he went down, while that of Smith was discovered about 125 feet from where he disappeared. The latter's body was found in water about 20 feet deep. While the body of Nunn was located within a few minutes, it was around 7:30 before that of his companion was found.
Omar Nunn, father of the drowned boy, is employed at the Ayrshire dairy. Smith and Anderson arrived in Great Falls but a short time ago, seeking employment. They came west in the hope of finding work in the harvest fields. Arriving here they looked up Nunn, who was a cousin of Anderson's.
Besides his parents, Nunn is survived by several brothers and sisters. Smith's mother lives in South Dakota and his father in Nebraska.
