Wing to Honor J. P. Parrish

The only living member of the original board of trustees at Georgetown County Memorial County Hospital will be honored this Sunday.

Joel P. Parris, former board trustee chairman, will have the hosptial's new $12.9 million dollar addition to his honor.

"Mr. Parrish served on the board of this hospital for 30 years. This is our way of paying tribute for his many years of dedicated service," said Richard J. Ferdon Jr., board of trustees chairman.

The orginial board of trustees was established in 1946, and Parrish served as chairman of the board from 1956 until 1976.

During this period of time, Parrish was instrumental in various phases of hosptial expansion. This expansion included the nurses home, the hospital's laundry service and maintnance buildings, the new emergency room, the third floor and the Thomas A. Yawkey Wing.

The third addition and the new wind expanded the bed capacity at the hospital to 133.

Parrish has also served as acting administrator of the hospital when needed.

"I've been in the family for 37 years and the (Parrish) lived and breated the hospital for many years," said Francis B. Ford, trustee board member and Parrish's son in law.

A native of Clio, Parrish came to Georgetown in 1924 and established Parrish Motor Company. At the time he was owner of Parrish Oil company, a Gulf Oil distributor.

He was one of the planners who founded the first Chamber of Commerce of Georgetown and was on of the first airplane pilots in Georgetown County. His pilot's license number was four, classifying him as a pioneer aviator.

After World War II, with no hospital in the community, persons in need of major medical health care had to travel to Conway or Florence.

A group of businessme in Georgetown, along with Parrish, got together to plan such a facility. It was later actually started by the American Legion.

Parrish's main concern was the welfare of the community and to provide health care for the people, say family members.

Parrish is a charter member of the Georgetown Rotary Club where he served as president. He is past president of the Georgetown Country Club, a member of the General Motors Dealers Association.

Parrish who is now retired, stays busy in his woodworking shop making furniture for his children and grandchildren.

A member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Parrish is married to the former Mary Louise Butt. They have three daughters: Sara Josephine Barnes of Waynesboro GA; Alice Quince Flenniken of Montreal Canada, and Mary Louise Ford of Georgetown; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Parrish said that one of the greatest compliments he ever recieved was from Archie Huntington of Brookgreen Gardens, a major influence on Parrish in business and dealing with people. Huntington said "You have something that no one can ever take away: you're a self made man.
