Gerald Richard Herndon passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in his home, with family. He was born October 17, 1926, in Christian County, Missouri, the son of Leslie O. and Clare B. Herndon. Gerald was a longtime resident of Springfield, and was a retired accountant. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran. From 1944 to 1946, he served on various South Pacific Islands and Navy Reserves until 1950. Gerald enjoyed history, especially World War II era. He enjoyed listening to music of the 1930 and 1940 eras. He enjoyed working in his yard and was a St. Louis Cardinal fan. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie of the home; two sons, Larry A. Herndon of Kansas City, Mo., and Richard M. Herndon of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Ben Herndon and Aimee Herndon of Kansas City, Mo., and Colleen Herndon of Houston, Texas; one sister, Ruth Hancock of Illinois; two nephews, Douglas Thomas and Dennis Thomas of Illinois; and one sister-in-law, Catherine Hickman of Willard, Mo. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
