James was the son of John R. & Mary J. (Agan) Crandall. He married Lucinda Elizabeth Totten 2 Feb. 1879 in Crawford Co. They had John Matt & Charles S.Crandall. After her death, he married Frances J. Kimbrel 11 Jan. 1883 in Orange Co. They had Levi, Edward L., Mary Elizabeth & Gilbert Crandall. He moved to Iowa when he was 40.
