PIONEER HAXTUN WOMAN SUCCUMBS BURIED TUESDAY
Mrs. Josephine Hill, 75, one of the pioneer mothers of the Haxtun community, died Sunday, June 14, at the family home, one mile east of Haxtun.
Mrs. Hill had been a resident of the Haxtun community for more than 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away 25 years ago.
She is survived by nine children and a number of grandchildren as well as a number of sisters and other closer relatives.
She had been ill for several months and her condition had been critical for several weeks before her death.
The children who survive are Lloyd E. Hill, Mrs. Ethel Peter, Mrs. Clara Freemyer, Mrs. Florence Worthley, Mrs. Elma Davis, Mrs. Daisy Kerwood, Mrs. Bessie Kidwell and Frank and George Hill.
Mrs. Hill came to the Haxtun country with the first settlers and knew the joys and sorrows incident to rearing a family and making a home on the frontier. During her many years of residence in this section she had made many friends who will be grieved to learn of her passing.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Church of the Brethren in Haxtun. The Rev. Olmstead, pastor of the Christian church at Holyoke preached the sermon. Interment was in the Haxtun cemetery.

Josephine Elston was born in Benton County, Indiana December 17, 1857 and died at Haxtun, Colorado June 14, 1931, at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 14 days.
She united with the Christian church in early life. On January 12, 1875 she was united in marriage with George W. Hill. To this union 11 children were born, nine of whom are living. They are: Lloyd E. Hill, Fort Worth, Texas; Ethel Peter, Wilmington, California; Clara Freemyer, Haxtun, Colorado; Florence Worthley, Sterling, Colorado; Elma Davis, Fleming, Colorado; Daza Kerwood, Kearney, Nebraska; Bessie Kidwell, George Hill, Haxtun, Colorado; Frank Hill, Arapahoe, Colorado. There are also 35 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. A sister and a brother died in infancy. A half brother, Frank Austin, of Holyoke; two step sisters, Mrs. Kittie Johnson, of Denver, and Miss William McVey, survive.
With her husband and family Mrs. Hill came to Colorado in 1889. They first settled on a homestead six miles west of Holyoke. They moved to Haxtun in 1898, where the husband passed away March 1, 1906.
