The eldest of five children. Named for the long deceased fiancee of her father William. In his diary there are references to the great joy her father felt upon the occasion of her birth. Her baptism is also described in detail. Nancy's Presbyterian father from Londonderry, had her baptized by the local Catholic priest. The Presbyterian minister refused to come to the house for the baptism and her protective father William refused to take Nancy to the church in the winter weather. Her clever mother recruited the services of the priest while on a social visit to a Catholic friend who was arranging a baptism for her child. William also describes the stir he caused as he anxiously wiped away the water from Nancy's brow as the baptism took place. The cause of Nancy's death is not known. Fortunately, it was not during her father's lifetime.
