Harry G. Borden, Ex-Freeholder, Died on Monday
Former Banker and Shrewsbury Official - Funeral Yesterday

Harry G. Borden of Shrewsbury, former Monmouth county freeholder, one of the original members of the Shrewsbury borough council and a former vice president and director of the Second National bank and trust company, died Monday morning in Monmouth Memorial hospital after a long illness. He would have been 74 years old next Wednesday.

Mr. Borden, a Republican, served on the board of freeholders for 12 years, being elected for his first term in 1921. In 1932, during his last year in office, he resigned his chairmanship of the finance committee and membership to the bridge, hospital and court house and jail committees, declaring that he was "tired of being a figurehead." He retained only his post as road chairman and later attacked the board for alleged waste of public funds.

Born at Shrewsbury on May 17, 1870, he was the son of William L. and Clemance Godet Borden. He was a life-long resident of Shrewsbury, and for more than 20 years was engaged in the building contracting business. He built many homes in Shrewsbury and the Lakewood section.

Mr. Borden served as assessor of Shrewsbury township for nine years. When Shrewsbury was incorporated as a borough, his fellow townsmen elected him to the first borough council, and he served under Mayor Benjamin J. Parker for several years.

Mr. Borden was a member of the Shrewsbury Presbyterian church, serving as a trustee for many years. For 20 years he was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. For the past 18 years, he and Mrs. Borden had resided with his cousin, C. Frank Borden of Broad street, Shrewsbury. He had been ill since January and was a patient in the hospital for the past two weeks.

Mr. and Mrs. Borden celebrated their golden wedding anniversary January 13, 1941. They were married at the Borden home by Rev. George Sikes, pastor of the Grace Methodist church of Red Bank. Mrs. Borden is the former Miss Sally Shutts of Shrewsbury. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. T.A. Bowne of Shrewsbury, and several cousins.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the Shrewsbury Presbyterian church with Rev. John A. Hayes, pastor of the Red Bank Presbyterian church, officiating in the absence of pastor, Rev. Robert C. Johnson. Members of the board of Freeholders attended in a body and there was a large delegation of other Monmouth county officials.

Members of the Shrewsbury fire company, of which Mr. Borden was an honorary member, were honorary bearers, and the company's truck was used to convey the many floral pieces to the cemetery. Police escort was furnished by Police Chief Otto F. Herden.

The active bearers were Chester P. Rogers, Ralph S. Pearce, B. Harold Nevius, James P. Morford, Edward Hourihan and Fred C. England. Miss Ella H. King was organist. Burial, in charge of the Mount Memorial home, was in the Presbyterian churchyard.
