Educator and Presbyterian minister. Served in the Civil War with the 154th Illinois Volunteers in 1865. Graduated from Monmouth College, 1877. Graduated from Xenia, Ohio Seminary and ordained in the United Presbyterian ministry, 1880. Pastor at Marissa, Illinois 1880-1885 and Bloomington, Indiana 1885-1898. Served as third president of Monmouth College 1898-1901. Resigned from Monmouth after his second wife hanged herself in the attic of their home. In 1911, he became pastor of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church in Richmond, where he was serving at the time of his death. He had served as a trustee of Monmouth College, the Xenia Seminary and Indiana University (1892-1898 and 1911-1915).
