AARON ARMSTRONG DEAD
HE PASSED AWAY AT HIS HOME SUNDAY
He was 67 Years Old and He Was One of the Best Known and Most Respected Residents in This Part of Monmouth County.
Aaron A. Armstrong died Sunday afternoon at his home on Sycamore avenue at Shrewsbury. He had been in failing health the past two years and he had occasionally been subject to attacks of sickness which kept him confined to the house. His last sickness developed a week previous to the end.
Mr. Armstrong was born 67 years ago at Freehold. He was a son of the late John H. and Elizabeth Heyer Armstrong. He lived on his father's farm until 35 years ago, when with his bride he moved to Shrewsbury where he had since resided. Mrs. Armstrong before her marriage was Miss Sophie Shutts, daughter of the late Daniel Shutts, of Tinton Falls. Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife.
For a few years Mr. Armstrong operated the Dr. James H. Patterson farm on Sycamore avenue at Shrewsbury. Then he moved to the farm on Sycamore avenue which is owned by George Hance Patterson and he lived there 26 years. Last February he retired from active work and moved to a house which he bought on the south side of Sycamore avenue, a short distance west of the Shrewsbury railroad station. Sometime ago Mr. Armstrong inherited a large farm near Freehold which was owned by his uncle, Judson Armstrong.
Mr. Armstrong was one of the most skillful and one of the hardest working farmers in this locality. He was especially famed for his large potato crops and it was said of him that he could get more potatoes out of the ground per acre than any other farmer in this part of the county. In his farming operations he was assisted by his son Charles Armstrong, who is now associated with Arthur W. Shutts in the management of a large string of race horses at Lexington, Kentucky.
In politics Mr. Armstrong was a Republican. He served for a number of years as chairman of the Shrewsbury township committee and he was a member of the committee at the time of his death. Invariably he was unopposed for re-election, Democrats as well as Republicans being satisfied that in Mr. Armstrong they had a worthy and conscientious public servant deserving of unanimous endorsement. It was with reluctance that Mr. Armstrong consented to become a candidate the last time he ran. He stipulated that in the event of his re-election he would not serve again as chairman of the committee on account of his failing health. Mr. Armstrong's colleagues offered the chairmanship to him when the committee organized, but Mr. Armstrong reiterated his declination of the honor.
Mr. Armstrong was courteous, generous of heart, a genial friend and an interesting companion. In all his business dealings he was honest and above board. Many persons in unfortunate circumstances were helped by Mr. Armstrong, but he never advertised nor spoke of these acts even to his closest friends.
In addition to his wife and son Mr. Armstrong leaves three sisters and three brothers. The sisters and brothers are Misses Elizabeth and Lillian Armstrong of Asbury Park; Mrs. Ella Hance of Belmar; H. Edward Armstrong of Red Bank; John L. Armstrong of Freehold and Judson Armstrong of Allentown.
The funeral will be held this afternoon at two o'clock at the house. Rev. Dwight L. Parsons, a former pastor of the Shrewsbury Presbyterian church, will conduct the service, assisted by Rev. J.T. Curtin. The bearers will be Benjamin J. Parker, Harry H. Campbell, Trevenian Bennett, Frank C. Byram, Harry G. Sickles and Alfred Grover. Burial will be made at the Shrewsbury Presbyterian cemetery.
