Edgar was born in Fairfield Township of Lenawee County on September 2, 1852, youngest of the three sons of Lorenzo D. and Sylvia (Baker) Morse. After attending the local schools he became a teacher. Edgar married Julia Crelley on December 8, 1874. In 1876 Edgar went to Iowa and worked on a ranch owned by his uncles. A year later he returned to Fairfield and to teaching. He soon became a partner of his brother Alonzo in A.Morse & Company, and traveled throughout Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania as a photographer (1879-1882). Julia gave birth to nine children, all of whom survived. In 1882 Edgar returned with his wife and children to the family farm in Fairfield Township from Pennsylvania. He was elected secretary of the local Mutual Fire Insurance Company in 1897. He was supervisor of Fairfield Township for 13 years, served at various times as secretary, treasurer and chairman of the county Democratic committee, and was superintendent of the poor from the fall of 1898 until his death on August 17, 1908.
