She enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and spending winters in Florida. She was a fan of the Red Sox and was one of the first and last customers each season at the frozen-custard stand in New Gloucester. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Gray.
Bessie and her husband owned and operated a Dairy Queen in Rumford and the Little HOBO Restaurant in Lewiston.
