Prestridge Lightfoot
She was born July 15, 1915, to Will Edmund Prestridge and Dora Senter Prestridge at their home two miles east of Alvarado in Johnson County. She passed away Jan. 15, 2004, at Walls Regional Hospital in Cleburne.
She married William Exta (Bill) Lightfoot on May 25, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1970.
Mrs. Lightfoot graduated from Alvarado High School, University of North Texas and North Texas State Teachers College, in 1940 with a major in elementary education and a minor in art. She later did graduate work in education at Texas Christian University.
She was a career educator, starting her teaching at age 16 in Barnesville, where she taught all the elementary grades. Later she taught at Willow Springs, responsible for all grades.
Mrs. Lightfoot came to the Alvarado Independent School District in the 1949-50 school year to teach a combined second and third grade classroom and continued to teach second grade in Alvarado until she retired in 1976 to be available for the arrival of her first grandson. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, first as a member of Grandview Chapter No. 828 and after its demise as a member of Alvarado No. 656. She was a past Worthy Matron in Grandview No. 828 and served as Deputy Grand Matron of District 3, Section 10 in 1976.
She held many grand offices over the years. She played piano in recent years both for Alvarado No. 656 and for the Rainbow girls. She was a 64-year member of the OES. She was a member of the Baptist church all her life. She was baptized at Willow Springs Baptist Church, where her father was deacon and led the singing. After she, her husband and girls moved to town, so she could get to school when rain made the country roads unreliable, she joined the First Baptist Church and remained a member until her death.
She attended three different FBC buildings under the leadership of many different pastors, but she loved them all. She had a strong faith in God and believed that all he did was for the best. In hard times she would say, "This too, shall pass," and her positive outlook and wonderful smile were a blessing to all who knew her. She always thought the best of everyone. She sang in the choir and was a member if the Phebian class.
Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Benja and Billy Dale Allen of Cedar Hill and Dora Gail and Larry Yawn of Round Rock. She loved her sons-in-law as though they were her sons. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Rachel and Walter I. Boteler of Glen Rose; two grandsons, Keith Justin Yawn and Mark Clifton Yawn of Austin; three nieces, Frances Lorraine Oliver of Cleburne, Janice Leigh Coleman and Hollace Anne Hunt of Dallas; two great-nephews, Garth Oliver of Katy and Tommy Oliver of Mobile, Ala.; four great-great-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins and in-laws.
