Jean Tompkins, 82, Milroy, died Monday in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. She had family members residing in Shelby County.

Born Aug. 18, 1915, in Rushville, she was the daughter of Claude and Iva (Orme) Smith. On Nov. 3, 1935, she married Charles "Cy" Tompkins, and he died Oct. 7, 1977.

She had been a legal secretary in Rushville for attorney David Malson.

She was a member of Milroy United Methodist Church, Colonial Dames Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution at Rushville, Milroy Monday Study Club, Rushville Historical Society, Milroy Culture Club and Milroy Bridge Club.

Survivors include a son Edward Crosby Tompkins, Grand Haven, Mich.; a sister, Rita Downey, Kokomo; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Burns Funeral Home, Milroy, with the Rev. Howard Bell officiating. Burial will be in Old Milroy Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
