Mr. Proctor was born in Little Rock section of Dillon County on December 29th 1846 and served through the Civil war as a member of Company C, 2nd South Carolina Battalion and at the time of his death was a member of the committee of three comprising the Roll of Honor for Horry County, which committee is charged with passing upon the elgibility of the applicants for pensions. His death leaves ony seventeen living Confederate Veterans in this County.
With the passing of Mr. Proctor there goes out possibly the oldest direct lineal descendant of John Bethea of Marion County, historically known as "Devil John" of Revolutionary fame, there being ony three steps in lineage between him and this Revolutionary hero. His maternal parent was Harriett Bethea, one of the fourteen children of William Bethea, who married Samuel Proctor. Both of his parents are buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery at Little Rock in Dillon County.
Early in life he married a Miss. Hamilton, daughter of the late Stephen Hamilton of Dillon. To this union were born ten children, all of whom are living. His helpmate died thirty-five years ago, and the deceased shortly thereafter moved to Horry County to make his home. He is survived by one whole sister, Mrs. Mary J. Hughes, Sumter, SC, several half brothers and sisters, fifty-three grandchildren and the following children: Rev. A. L. Proctor, John T. Proctor and Rufus C. Proctor, Alachua, Florida: Stephen S. Proctor, High Springs, Fla: Mrs. Annie L. Moore, Bennettsville, Mrs. Dora A. Proctor, Latta, Mrs. Ethel Jordan Nichols and Clemon Proctor, Mrs. John Holt and Miss. Sallie Proctor of Conway.
Since coming to Horry County Mr. Proctor has made his home with his maiden daughter, Miss sallie Proctor. While not in active business because of his health he appeared vigerous and was at times interested in the affairs of the community. He never complained. About a year ago he suffered an attack of influenza which of necessity weakened him at his advanced age, but never the less he was up and about the house. About two weeks ago however his condition became such that his physican advised an operation, which though holding out no reasonable hope of recovery, would relieve his pain and extend his days. Following this operation he temporarily recovered sufficently to recognize those of his family who came about his bedside, but he passed away as he had lived without complaint. All of his immediate family were at his bedside when the end came on Saturday.
